The Almuñécar Aquarium is located in an exceptional spot on the Mediterranean Coast. An enclave of great ecological importance which lies in the western basin of the Alboran Sea. The steady flow of currents between the Mediterranean and Atlantic gives rise to a remarkable biological diversity which features just as many Mediterranean species as it does Atlantic.
The relief of this part of Granada’s coast is characterized by an abundance of cliffs parallel to the sea, and just a short distance away it is also home to tall mountains which decorate the landscape.
The most western point of Granada’s coast possesses many beaches and coves, born at the foot of river estuaries and precipices. The unique orography of the area has resulted in natural landscapes gaining protected status on behalf of Autonomous authorities, for example the nature reserve of Maro-Cerro Gordo, and the impressive cliff of Punta de la Mona.

Church of the Incarnation
This church was built in the late XVI century, and is the only Counter-Reformation style church in Granada. It was built upon an ancient Roman warehouse.
The Virgin de la Antigua, patron of Almuñecar, is displayed on the main altar of the Church.
Old town of Almunecar
The old town of Almuñécar is one of the biggest historical , provincial and cultural treasures of the municipality at the Costa Tropical.
The centre of Almuñécar envelops the castle “San Miguel” , where the area uses its name , known as area “Del Castillo” or “ de San Miguel” .
The streets are asphalted with the traditional paving –stone of Almuñecar , full of curves and small places or patios which are transformed in meeting points or family circles for the people of Almuñécar , called “Almuñequeros”. Walking through the streets of Almuñécar you will find precious corners and authentic treasures in this incomparable piece of the tropical coast .
San Miguel Castle
Located in a privileged area of the incomparable Costa Tropical, from here you have an amazing panoramic view of Almuñecar, which allows you to enjoy the beautiful views of the beaches of Almuñecar, a decisive factor for those coming to Almuñecar to enjoy their holidays.
It is an emblematic destination during the Patron Saint Festivities which are held in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua on 15th August. D. Lope de Valenzuela, who with a statue of the Virgen with baby Jesus in her arms, named her Patron of Almuñecar in memory of the defeat of the Moorish troups..
On August 15th the Virgen is paraded and her image is taken out to sea from the beach of San Cristobal and brought back to shore at the Paseo, her voyage out to the Peñones marks the beginning of the renowned firework display. Within the Castle walls you can find a variety of remains which give you a global vision of Almuñecar´s eventful past and you can see, without excavations, truly interesting Arabic remains.

Botanical Garden El Majuelo
The title of “Tropical Coast” is not by chance. There is sunshine here for more time than anywhere else in Europe. Winters are short and summers long and they fuse with Autumn and Spring making it possible to enjoy Almuñecar´s beaches pretty much all year round. This little stretch of Coast enjoys a micro climate, unique in Spain thus justifying its title of “Costa Tropical”.
The climate enjoyed in Almuñecar welcomes a wide variety of exotic plants and it is in the Botanical Garden of El Majuelo where the majority of these varieties have been brought together, in total 182 different species..
A sublime garden on the Tropical Coast and one of just a few existing in Europe. The Roman fish salting factory provides wonderful surroundings for your visit. The Botanical Garden of El Majuelo is located at the foot of San Miguel Castle and is right in the town centre of Almuñecar; it is a place of reference for recreational and craft work activities. There are also a series of small shops where you can purchase souvenirs to remind you of your visit to this beautiful place.

Archaeological Museum Cave 7 palaces
The Archaeological museum in Almuñecar is an essential place to visit whilst staying on the Costa Tropical.. Visitors will learn more about the fascinating remains of Almuñecar´s historical past such as the collection of numerous objects discovered at the Necropolis of “Puente de Noy” and “Laurita” or the fish salting factory at the Majuelo Botanical Park. The Museum is also home to the most ancient document found in the Peninsula.
From an archaeological point of view, the most important piece is the stunning Egyptian Vase which dates back to XVII b.C. It is carved out of solid quartz and was discovered in a house in Almuñecar. Numerous Archaeologists think that this object is engraved with the most ancient script known in Spain. Other archaeological finds include a large number of burial items ranging from urns to jewelry which formed part of the funeral dowries.
Phoenician art is represented by sculptures and adornments such as rings and diadems.

Loro Sexi Ornithological Park
The Ornithological Park is located just 100 metres from one of the most attractive beaches of Almuñecar and the Costa Tropical.
It is home to over 1.500 specimens from nearly 200 different species. The variety is so wide and their origins so perse that it generates great expectation in both residents of Almuñecar and visitors alike as well as being of significant importance to the Costa del Sol and, of course, the Costa Tropical.
From the Hotel suites Albayzin del Mar to the Bird Park of Loro Sexi there is a short stroll down the streets of Almuñecar which lead guests to the Botanical Park of El Majuelo, where they can see the remains of the ancient Roman Fish Salting Factory, alternatively guests can take a different route along the promenade of San Cristobal beach next to the Peñones del Santo which have been nominated as candidates to becoming declared a Natural Monument of Andalucía.
The Ornithological park of Loro Sexi also offers another attraction to visitors, the “Jardin de Cactus” or Cactus Garden situated in the highest part of the park, near the arabic walls of the castle. Little ones will thoroughly enjoy this fun and educational visit.
